July was not such a fun month for my healthy, happy-go-lucky 17 month old. The first week of July I decided to run Eli to the pediatrician for a quick peek into his ears just to make sure he didn't have an earache. He had been waking up several times through the night and was just being plain mean. "Nope, his ears are clear, but his throat looks terrible." The verdict-- strep throat! STREP THROAT?? With no fever and feeling mostly well? Are you kidding me?? Apparently not. Apparently lots of one year olds get it and never have any symptoms. I just happen to have the sweetes little boy ever, so being grumpy was a symptom for him! The good news? Amoxicillin works to clear up a strep throat. The bad news? Eli is allergic! (Sorry baby, it is your Mommy's fault. I am so sory you inherited nothing from me except for my allergies!!)
At first, I thought he just had the Amoxil rash. Sydney did it when she took Amoxil one of the first times, and it wasn't a big deal. Nothing a little Benadryl wouldn't fix! And, it was a side effect, not a reaction! But then, it looked bad! Really bad! So, back to the pediatrician's office we went. Home with a new antibiotic, and a new label "Allergic to Penicillin!" The rash looked HORRIFIC.
These pictures are bad, but there were worse. They are not allowed to be posted! The rash progressed and three days later, Eli would not even stand---> joint swelling. So, we started the steroids. Literally less than 12 hours later, he was fine!
Then, a week later, he was back to waking up in the middle of the night and being a grouch and we had some seriously green snot. I was nearly determined we were NOT going BACK to the pediatrician's office! I figured he had just gotten used to getting a cup of milk in the middle of the night and being so rotten while he was sick. A week later, I decided I had to take him to make sure he was ok. DOUBLE EAR INFECTION AND A SINUS INFECTION! This poor kid can't catch a break!! Now, on to ANOTHER round of antibiotics and a really guilty mom!
Praise the Lord, we are finally germ-free and back to sleeping all night and being a sweetheart!
